HOW TO SOW IN PARK STARTS

Park Starts are the product of the most up-to-date plant growing practices and will enable you to grow strong, healthy seedlings with minimum effort. Each tray contains 18 individual, pre-moistened plugs. Each plug has been pre-dibbled so that a hole is already present for seed sowing. Just drop one or two seeds in each hole, place in a favorable location, keep moist with a weak fertilizer solution, and wait for plants to emerge.

The holes need not be covered over after sowing. Consult your seed packet for special instructions.

1. Remove Park Starts tray from plastic wrap, keeping up right. They are ready to sow as is. (The first big advantage of Park Starts is that there is no mess from wetting, crumbly soil.)

2. For most varieties, place one or more seeds in the pre-dibbled hole at the top of each plug. Except sow tiny seeds on the surface of the plug, not down in the hole. (Another advantage: Most seeds do not need covering in Park Starts, each plug provides the optimum environment for germination.)

3. Place Park Starts in a favorable location as indicated on the seed packet.

4. Mix a weak fertilizer solution, following directions on the free fertilizer packet included with your order.

5. Moisten plugs with fertilizer solution by sprinkling lightly over the top of tray or by soaking bottom of tray in shallow solution. (Do not flood with heavy top watering, which may dislodge seeds.)

6. Keep plugs moist with fertilizer solution until seedlings emerge. (A third advantage: Because of their composition, Park Starts retain just the right amount of water. Less frequent watering may be needed and there is less danger of overwatering than if grown by other methods.)

7. After seedlings emerge, provide more light. Water as often as necessary to keep plugs moist with fertilizer solution. Allow water to run through the bottom of Park Starts at each watering. Important: Begin fertilizing even before seedlings are visible.

8. If you have double-sown, keep only the strongest plant in each plug. Remove others by cutting off at the base with sharp scissors.

9. Transplant Park Starts when the first true leaves appear. To transplant, poke out the plug from the bottom and plant where it is to grow. (A fourth big advantage of Park Starts is that you can suc- cessfully transplant when seedlings are very young. The plug stays intact and does not require a root system to hold it together.

10. If weather or timing delays your transplanting of young plants, prop the trays to allow some air space beneath them until you are able to transplant. (This builds a stronger root system within the plug, another Park Starts advantage.) Save your old trays. You can space out seedlings into them as leaves begin to touch.
