KEEPING SEEDS AT HOME

It is best to sow your seeds as soon as they arrive. However, if you have to keep them for any length of time before sowing, put them in a cool, dry place. Once the seed packets have been opened, select a bottle with an airtight cap and just big enough to hold your partial seed packets. Include a packet of moisture absorbing Silica Gel for each 10 packets of seed. Place the jar in the refrigerator away from the freezing unit.

As long as the Silica Gel is dry enough to absorb more moisture, particles in it are blue in color. When they turn pink, it is no longer effective and should be removed from the jar and fresh Silica Gel put in with the seed.

To rejuvenate the effectiveness of the Silica Gel, dry it in an oven at 250 degrees one to two hours. The Silica Gel will turn blue again and be ready for reuse. The Silica Gel must be stored in an airtight jar; otherwise, it will take up moisture from the air and need drying before it is used with seed storage.
