| DAMPING OFF |
|
Damping-Off is a microscopic fungus growth which attacks the baby plants just as they emerge from the ground or while they are still small. It is the reason for many failures which are blamed on the seed, especially where very small seed are concerned. This fungus growth is present in practically all soils and may also be airborne. Lack of aeration, overwatering, and overheating cause spread of the disease. The seedlings are attacked at the soil line, causing the plants to wilt, fall over, and die. Sometimes they are attacked before emerging from the soil. To prevent or control Damping-off, we recommend the following: 1. Start seed in a suitable sowing medium, such as Park-Starts and Park's Grow Mix. It must be remembered, however, that it is possible for airborne spores to infiltrate the medium after planting. 2. Provide correct temperature. Follow germination instructions on the seed packet, Park's Gardener's Handbook, and the index pages of our Spring Flower Book. 3. Light is very essential. Use of a Gro-Lamp is most beneficial. 4. Avoid overwatering. Morning watering is best. 5. Select a ventilated but not drafty area for seed flats. If trays are covered with polyethylene, remove the covers at least once a day for aeration. |
